Aura @ One Voice

One Voice, July 9-15, is a fundraising event about protecting the rights of creators. Donations will go to assist Gala Phoenix with her legal costs as she fights to clear her name and get back her business – Curio. The full story can be found on the Curio website, but the Reader’s Digest version is that because someone has abused the DMCA process, the process which is supposed to protect creators’ intellectual property, Gala has lost her SL business – her primary source of income – and faces massive court costs for copyright litigation. It’s disgusting to think that someone, the owner of Hush Skins, can not only rip off someone’s hard work and pass it off as their own for a profit, but also quickly file for a copyright in their home country when they realize they’ve been found out. It’s sad, it’s shameful, and One Voice is about creators coming together in support of each others’ rights because if it can happen to Gala, it can happen to any creator on the grid.

One Voice will open at midnight on July 9th. The event is HUGE, with creators having up to four items with 50-100% of proceeds going to assist Gala. Some of the creators who have teamed up include:

What’s Your Digits 2 – The Mesh Revolution

Posted by on Jun 30, 2012 in Challenges, Mesh, Opinion, What's Your Digits | 1 comment

SS-DigitsTake2

Last August, the lovely Strawberry Singh posed the question “What’s Your Digits?”. Since then, mesh and standard sizing has caused a bit of debate about sizing and shapes and maintaining individuality. I’ve been willing to change my shape twice since August, and both times I felt like I maintained a curvy look that still is “me”.

Initially when mesh was introduced, my August shape fell somewhere between a Medium and Large and I tweaked some sliders up to fit a Large exclusively. As I began to wear mesh more exclusively, I began to notice that, as in RL, some of the things I really wanted to wear, just were not that flattering in the Large size so I made the decision to tweak down to a Medium. I was really worried about maintaining my curvier shape, but experimenting with sliders resulted in a shape that fits a Medium while still being curvy.

These days, I’m wearing mesh all the time and have found myself boxing up old clothes because a) I’ll never wear them again and b) I’ve bought their mesh counterpart. Unless it is something amazing that I HAVE to have, I very rarely buy non-mesh clothing anymore.

The mesh deformer may resolve some of the issues that people have with mesh fitting, but I’m not convinced that it will be the silver bullet. I’m pretty sure there will always be a need for multiple sizes and alpha layers.  I guess for me, seeing is believing and I don’t think we’ll be seeing the deformer in production anytime soon.

Why?

Why?

There was a lot to ask “Why?” about today aside from this fantastic lingerie available at the Whore Couture Fair by Why. The best why of the day seems to be “Why do I see so many boobs on the feeds?”. There was some big to-do on plurk about posting NSFW content and it all just went downhill from there. My stance on it is: if you don’t like that sort of thing, don’t look at it and don’t create it. Generally people put NSFW content behind a cut or label it specifically. Feeds don’t always pay attention to cuts, so you might be out of luck there, but that’s the feed, not the individual blogger. Personally, I have done a 180 on NSFW content here on Simply Stylish over the past year or so and I’m comfortable with that. Call me names if you will, and some of you most definitely have, but I’m enjoying myself and that’s what it’s all about.

Feathered Lady

Feathered Lady

For those who are doubtful that an internet blackout would actually have an effect on lawmakers, yesterday, many representatives who previously supported SOPA or PIPA have withdrawn their support – including original co-sponsors of these bills. Now, I’m not vain enough to think that blacking out Simply Stylish had a major part in this, but what I do believe is that if anything, it helped raise awareness of these extremely flawed bills for protecting intellectual property. We really do need legislation to protect IP rights, but censorship is not the correct way to do this. An alternative to SOPA and PIPA that is being explored is the OPEN Act. The Open Act’s goals are to secure an open internet and protect creator rights. If you’re interested, the site allows anyone to log in and make annotations on the bill to help build a better bill.

Feathered Lady

Anyways, today’s look is the Feathered Lady dress from DCNY which was designed for the Etheria event. It includes seamed stockings and is just so pretty and sexy. The feather skirt is well done and it is available in four lush colors.

Blackout

Blackout

Simply Stylish will be blacked out on January 18th as part of the SOPA Blackout.  SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) and PIPA (Protect Intellectual Property Act) are two bills coming before the US Congress and Senate that could greatly affect internet freedom. In protest, tomorrow, January 18th is a SOPA Blackout. Simply Stylish will be participating in this blackout as the passing of these acts will jeopardize all internet content – including that in Second Life, YouTube, Twitter, Reddit, Imgur, Wikipedia, etc.  While I do agree with protecting intellectual property rights, I do believe there are better ways to do so without limiting the freedoms and creativity of others. The traffic to Simply Stylish is miniscule compared to major sites like Google, Wikipedia, Reddit, and WordPress – all of whom are participating in the SOPA blackout – but hopefully it helps at least one person better understand SOPA and PIPA. If you’re in the US, contact your representatives and let them know that you are not in favor of these acts. Visit American Censorship for more information.

See you on January 19th.

Build Me Up Buttercup

Oxford

LeeZu released this super cute mesh dress yesterday. It’s available in solids and stripes and comes in three sizes. I really do love this dress, but I wish it was based off of the sizing standards that a lot of mesh creators are using. Be sure to try the demo before buying!

Plurk and SL have been pretty negative today. It made me start to wonder why it’s so easy to hop on the negativity bandwagon. Not that it isn’t warranted in this case, but in general, what if we put that much energy into building people up and being positive to each other? Now, I’m not Little Miss Sweetness and Light all the time, but I do appreciate the positive and good behind building people up. I used to have a friend who would say “You look great” and then follow it up with “But that skin/hair/dress/pants/all of the above is ugly”. Why bother being positive if you’re going to completely criticize and knock someone down? I think we can all stand to smile a little more, love a little more, and reap those rewards because you totally get back what you give.
